Balakovo is located in the Saratov region, north-east of Saratov at a distance of 176 kilometers. The first mention of the city dates back to 1738, at that time Balakovo was a Cossack possession - Balakov yurt.
According to the official version, the city of Balakovo was founded in 1762 by Old Believers, who were "urged" by Russian Empress Catherine II to return from abroad to Russia and settle on the land between the rivers Bolshoi and Maly Irgiz. Balakovo was a Volga village. Status of the city was given in 1911.
In 1936 Balakovo became part of the Saratov region, before the city was part of Samara province. The formation of the final boundaries of the city and the population growth contributed to the construction of the Saratov hydroelectric power station in the period from 1956 to 1971, which led to the flooding of the coastal area. Balakovo Municipality was established in 1996 and in 2004 was renamed the Balakovo Municipal District.
Balakovo, the third largest city in the Saratov region (after Saratov and Engels), is located on the left bank of the Volga. The city is about 200 kilometers away from the regional capital.
