Kurortny Prospekt is the main street of Sochi and at the same time one of the longest highways in the world. It stretches for almost 11 km from the Riviera Bridge to the bridge over the river Matsesta. As the main and central, this street is the most beautiful in the city, there are many gardens and greenery and a variety of architecture - buildings, bridges, monuments and viaducts.
The avenue was laid out in 1934 by order of Joseph Stalin, in his honor it was then named "Stalinsky". Its main purpose was to shorten the path between the Lower and Upper Old Town in the central part of Sochi and to connect these areas with the neighborhood Svetlana.
In 1957 it was renamed into Kurortny prospect and with time it was almost entirely built up with architectural monuments.
One of the most famous parts of Kurortny Avenue is a pedestrian Platan Alley. In 1913 these plane-trees were planted by Sochi gymnasium students to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty.
In the same alley there are famous Sochi "Singing fountains": in summer in the evenings the water jets illuminated with different colors "dance" to the music, and in the daytime they are a water cascade on the wall of the nearby bar.
