There are several versions of the origin of the name of the city. According to the most common one, it was named after the Tatar sound of Sokol Mountain - Sary tau. Its predecessor was the town Uvek, which appeared in the times of the Golden Horde. Later Uvek was destroyed, but the settlement continued to exist and grow.
