The town of Arachova in Greece is a lively tourist destination thanks to its three ski centers on the slopes of Mount Parnassus. It is very popular in winter, but the town is full of visitors all year round because of its proximity to the ancient Delphi. A large number of tour buses that run daily to Delphi throughout the year often stop in Arachov. Tourists stop for a bite to eat in traditional restaurants or shop in local grocery stores.
Many famous people have visited the town in the recent past, including Aristotle Onassis, Winston Churchill, Maria Callas, the Beatles, Jackie Kennedy and many others.
There are many ancient settlements in the area, dating back to 1200 BC. The oldest finds date back to the Neolithic period (about 3000 BC). In Homeric times there was one of the eight major cities of the area.
The village of Arachova was founded around 1300 A.D. when the Franks occupied the area and the local leader united the disparate settlements of the area into one. The village developed rapidly, and in 1435 A.D. it was considered a "bustling town."
In 1803 it was set on fire by the Turks, and during the War of Independence in 1821 the inhabitants suffered greatly. In November 1826, the Battle of Arachova was decisive, where the victory of the Greeks here was extremely important. The village was liberated on November 2, 1828 by Dimitrios Ypsilantis.
In 1870, a devastating earthquake claimed the lives of many inhabitants and many buildings were completely destroyed or severely damaged. In the 1970s, a year before the completion of the Parnassus ski resort, Arahova was a small village that mainly attracted tourists due to its proximity to Delphi. After the resort opened its gates, Arahova gradually became one of the top winter destinations in Greece.
Despite the fact that most of the local population is engaged in cattle breeding, cultivation of land or growing olives, Arahova has a fairly well-developed hotel and tourist infrastructure in general - there are more than 30 hotels, from expensive luxury hotels to more modest budget. There are also many stores and souvenir stores, where you can buy jam and honey, locally produced olive oil, fine Greek cheeses and halva, and, of course, various souvenirs to remember
