The town of South West Rocks is located on the coast in New South Wales, Australia, near the mouth of the McLeay River. It is about 40 km from Kempsey . Jerseyville is located nearby.
The population of Southwest Rockies is 5,313 and continues to grow steadily. The tourist population of Southwest Rockies increases markedly during the holiday season. Local tourist attractions include the area's beaches, as well as man-made landmarks such as the Trial Bay Jail and the Smokey Cape Lighthouse. Because of the warm ocean in the area, fed by the East Coast Current, which flows from tropical regions, you can swim year-round.
The city was originally founded on the shores of Trial Bay in 1866. By 1889, however, Southwest Cliffs had established itself as a popular bathing resort for McLay Valley residents.
Southwest Cliffs got its name most likely from the captains of passing ships, who claimed that it was safest to dock ships near the cliffs, southwest of Cape Laggers (the point on which the Trial Bay jail is built). Another theory is that their moorings would be safe if they kept the cliffs to the southwest.
On May 13, 1770, Captain James Cook noticed smoke from a fire on a mountain he called Smoky Cape. In front of the mountain is now the lighthouse at Cape Smokey.
