Orsk is a large city in the Orenburg region, located at the confluence of the rivers Or and Ural, 286 kilometers from the regional center. The area of the settlement is 621 square kilometers.
Shevchenko Square is one of the most beautiful squares in the new city, a favorite place for festivities, holidays, Christmas trees, rallies and demonstrations. It was named in memory of the Ukrainian poet and painter T.G. Shevchenko, who was exiled to Orsk fortress in 1847-1848.
The square is formed by the typical Soviet buildings, one of which housed the hotel and restaurant "Druzhba") and the building of the former Palace of Culture machinists (now - shopping center "Moscow"). It was built in 1959, designed by architect Bartashevich (later reworked by architect Bazarova) in the neoclassical style.
Behind the palace placed a small park of engineers, openwork cast-iron fence which was made in 1959 at the YuUMZ. In the center of the square, in front of the palace, is a monument to Shevchenko (sculptor L.M. Pisarevsky, architect (N.K. Gabelko), installed in 1959.
