Whitley Bay is a seaside town on the northeast coast of England. Historically, it is governed in Northumberland as part of the North Tyneside town of Tyne and Wear.
Wheatley is first mentioned about 1100, when King Henry I gave it, along with other possessions of the Priory of Tynemouth, which were mentioned in ancient documents and maps before that date as Whitely, Whiteley, Hwiteleg, Whitelight, Wheatley, Whitley, Whitlow, Whitlat. Whitley is also mentioned in the charters of King Henry II , King Richard I and King John, affirming the prior of their dominions and liberties.
The town was known as Wheatley until the 1890s, by which time confusion with Whitby in North Yorkshire regularly led to misdirected mail. The last straw occurred in September 1901, when a former resident died in Edinburgh and his body was to be buried in St. Paul's Cemetery in Whitley. Unfortunately, the body was moved to Whitby by mistake, which delayed the funeral. When the council asked residents for a new name, the most popular choice was Whitley Bay. Although it has since been officially known as Whitley Bay, many residents still call the town Whitley.
