Casacalenda is a municipality in Italy, located in the Molise region, in the province of Campobasso. It has a population of 2,441, with a population density of 36 inhabitants/km². Cover an area of 67 km².
Campobasso (Provincia di Campobasso) is a province in Italy, in the Molise region. Its capital is the city of Campobasso.
It has an area of about 2,941 square kilometers, a population of 223,871 (as of 2017), and consists of 84 communes.
A small Croatian minority, speaking an archaic dialect of Croatian, lives in the eastern part of the province. Croats live mostly in Akkuaviva Kollekroć, San Felice del Molise and Montemiro.
The first settlers in the territory were the Samnites, a group of Sabellian tribes that dominated this region of Italy, from about 600 to 290 B.C.
After the war with Rome from 343 BC to 290 BC, the territory of the ancient region of Sannio (the central part is the present province of Campobasso) was included in the Roman Region IV Samnium.
In 570, after the invasion of the Lombards, the territory was annexed to the Lombard duchy of Benevento, which led to the reduction of the estates and assets of the ecclesiastical bishoprics. The Langobards named the city Campus Vassorum (vassal territory), which later became Campobasso.
In 860 the principality of Capua emerged, it included the counties of Venafro, Larino, Trivento, Boiano, Isernia, Campomarino and Termoli.
With the advent of the Neapolitan Republic a new administrative structure was created, the territory was divided into departments and cantons.
On September 27, 1806, after the French occupation, Molise became an autonomous province consisting of the counties of Campobasso and Isernia to which were added the counties of Larino and Agnone.
After a constitutional amendment in December 1963, the province of Campobasso was separated from Abruzzo, given the status of region and renamed Molise. The situation remained unchanged until 1970, when 52 municipalities were separated into the province of Isernia, created by Law No. 2 of February 1970.
