Kalamata is a small seaside city located in the southwest of the Peloponnese peninsula, the administrative center of the Messinia region. Compared to the polluted megalopolises, the air in Kalamata is filled with aromas of color and the smell of fresh breezes.
Kalamata, like the rest of Greece, has come a long historical way. The city originated in the Mycenaean period and was called Phares. Throughout its existence the city was ruled by the Spartans, the French, the Byzantines and the Turks. It was not until March 23rd, 1821, that the city was occupied by the freedom fighters. This day marked the beginning of the fight for independence and became a national holiday of Greece. Most of the buildings suffered at the hands of the Turks, who set fire to the city as punishment for the Greeks for disobedience. But in the early years of Greek independence Kalamata was rebuilt by the French, as evidenced by the neo-classical style buildings that have survived.
The region of Messinia has long been famous for its fertile land. There are many olive trees on its territory, the fruits of which are recognized as the best in the world.
You can capture the city at a glance by climbing the hill on which there is a medieval fortress built by Baron Villarduen. On the slopes of this hill are the remains of the old town. On the territory of the fortress there is a summer theater, which holds concerts and performances.
Below the hill is Ipandis Square, on which stands the large Cathedral of Ipandis tou Sotiros, built in 1873. In total there are about 50 different churches in the city and there are two active monasteries in the vicinity. This is a favorite place for pilgrimages and recreation for the locals.
Kalamata boasts the city beach and promenade of Plateia Navarinou, as well as numerous rocky and sandy scenic coves. And through the exceptionally clear and warm water you can watch flocks of fish. Fans of active recreation can go yachting, hang-gliding or sky-surfing. On the waterfront there are numerous hotels, bike paths, cozy cafes.
