The street is named after the novelist, playwright, publicist Maxim Gorky, real name - Alexei Maksimovich Peshkov.

It was formed in the late 19th century and for some time was the western border of the city and was called - Zagorodnaya Street. At the beginning of the XX century it was renamed into Milyutinskaya street in honor of the famous Cherepovets mayor I.A. Milyutin. In 1919 Milyutinskaya was renamed into the street of the poor peasants, and in 1936 - into the street of Maxim Gorky.

It originates from the Sheksna river, where the Nikolskoe village (Nikolskaya Sloboda) used to be located, and ends in the railway and bus stations. It has buildings of Cherepovets State University, Komsomolets House of Music and Cinema, an eight-story building "Etazhi", many shopping centers, city markets and a distillery. Maksim Gorky Street is adjoined by Leninsky Komsomol Park and the city park of culture and leisure.
