Albissola Marina was a settlement of the Ingauni (a tribe of Ligurians), later conquered by the Romans and called Alba Dosilia (now in the communal territory of Albisola Superiore). During the fall of the Western Roman Empire, barbarian invasions led to the division of the city into two distinct areas, one by the sea and the other at the foot of the hills.
In the Middle Ages it was part of the county of Vado and later of the possessions of the Marquis of Savona and Albisola (1122). In the early 12th century, the two Albisola's founded a united commune whose main activities included trade, agriculture, fishing and pottery production; after years of struggle, it came under Genoese control, beginning in 1251. In 1343 Albissola, together with the communes of Celle Ligure and Varazza, swore allegiance to the Genoese Republic, which they remained (with a certain degree of autonomy) until 1797, when the territory was captured by Napoleonic troops.
After 1815, Albissola followed the history of the Kingdom of Sardinia and then the Kingdom of Italy. It became part of the newly formed province of Savona in 1927.
