Webcam Menorca Island, Ciutadella. Central Square
The second most important city of Menorca, Ciutadella was once the capital of the island. With the beginning of British rule in the 18th century, the capital was moved to Mahon. The old town is interesting with its pretty medieval streets and Baroque and Gothic buildings, Renaissance palaces and aristocratic atmosphere. It is also the most "festive" city, where most fiestas and celebrations are held.
The name of the city comes from the word "citadel". Its history goes back to the reign of the Carthaginians. During its centuries-long history Ciutadella has been dominated by a variety of empires and invaders from the Caliphate of Cordoba, the Kingdom of Aragon, the destruction by the Turks to the passing to British occupation. Nevertheless, the city has maintained its authenticity and charm and to this day is the cultural capital of Menorca.
Ciutadella is located at the westernmost point of the island of Menorca, 45 km from Mahón and 47 km from the airport.
