Cherepovets is the largest city of the Vologda region, a large industrial center, located on the Sheksna river (left tributary of the Volga), at the mouth of the Yagorba river. The city successfully operates huge enterprises - JSC "Severstal", JSC "Ammophos", JSC "Severstal-metiz", JSC "Cherepovets "Azot". In addition, it is the only district center in Russia, which has its own university - Cherepovets State University. In Cherepovets there is the oldest museum in the region, many cultural institutions, theaters, shopping centers.
Dozens of archaeological sites were found in the vicinity of Cherepovets, mostly stone age sites. In the 10th century at the mouth of the Yagorba River permanent settlements of the Finno-Ugric Vse tribe appeared. In the 11-12 centuries the Finno-Ugric tribes were replaced by the Slavic population.
The name "Cherepovets" is associated with the topographical features of the area. The main occupations of the local population were fur hunting, fishing, crafts (blacksmithing, jewelry, metallurgy, bone carving) and, to a lesser extent, farming. The development of the settlements on the banks of Sheksna and Yagorba was hindered by a plague epidemic which broke out in 1350-1360 and drove people out of their settled places.
