Astrakhan is the oldest city in the Lower Volga region and the largest administrative center of the southern region. The city has a total area of just over 208 square kilometers.
The history of Astrakhan dates back to the second half of the 13th century. Haji-Tarkhan, which was mentioned in 1333, was located on the western bank of the Volga River and served as a base for the Tatar khan Sartak. Advantageously located at the intersection of major trade routes, the town was the center of retail and wholesale trade throughout the Golden Horde.
Astrakhan, formerly a fortress, became the main city in the province by decree of Peter the Great in 1717. By the end of the 19th century in Astrakhan lived more than 112 thousand inhabitants, 86.5 thousand of whom were Russian.
The geographically advantageous location of the city has made it a very important transportation hub of the Lower Volga region: in addition to air and rail connections in Astrakhan operates a river port and sea port.
