Civitavecchia is a city in central Italy on the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is located in Lazio region in the province of Rome, 80 kilometers north-west of the capital. The city is a seaport of Rome. The city has a population of 50,570 (2010 estimate). The name means "ancient city".
It was first known as Centum Cellae (Centum Cellae). Cellae (Centum Cellae) from a letter by Pliny the Younger (107 AD), as the place where the villa of Emperor Trajan was located. The origin of the name is controversial: there is a suggestion that it could refer to the centum (lat. 100), the halls in the emperor's villa. By 110 the Roman port was completed.

The port of Civitavecchia, also known as the "Port of Rome", is an important node of maritime freight and passenger transport in Italy. As part of the "Motorways of the Sea", it is connected to several Mediterranean ports and is one of the main links between the Italian mainland and Sardinia.
