Petrozavodsk is a city of national importance in northwestern Russia on the shores of Lake Onega; it is the capital of the Republic of Karelia, forming the Petrozavodsk Urban District.
On April 6, 2015 the city was awarded the honorary title of the Russian Federation "City of Military Glory".
The settlement originated at the laying of the public arms factory, originally called Shuisky (name comes from Shuisky pogost, where the production was organized), which took place on September 1, 1703. Already in 1704 - by the time of completion of construction - the plant was renamed in honor of Peter I in Petrovsky.
The settlement which had grown at the plant became known as Peter's settlement. In 1777 village got town status and was named Petrozavodsk. In 1941, after the occupation of the city by Finnish troops, it was renamed to Jaanislinna or Onegaborg. After the liberation of the city by the Red Army, the city was returned the name Petrozavodsk.
