Lipetsk is the capital of Lipetsk region with a population of over half a million people. The city is known as a major producer of steel, building materials, household appliances, mineral water, and juices. It is also home to the Lipetsk Aviation Center, where pilots of Russian aviation are trained.
Lipetsk was first mentioned in chronicles in 1283 in connection with the wars with the Mongol Tatars. As a result, the city was completely destroyed by the enemy, and for several centuries there was no mention of it anywhere. Only in the XVII century, the first mention of the village of Malye Studyonki Lipskie, which was located on the site of the modern settlement, appeared. In 1703 on the river Lipovka by order of Peter I, construction of new factories for the production of iron for the army and navy began. Since then the village began to grow and in 1709 it was renamed into the settlement of Lipskie Zavody. And in 1779, according to the decree of Catherine II, the settlement received the status of a district town called Lipetsk. At that time the population was about 6,000 people.
Lipetsk received a new round of development thanks to the active construction of railroads.
Russian and foreign entrepreneurs decided to develop ore deposits near the city. Also, interest in Lipetsk grew due to the opening of a resort here in the early 19th century.
January 6, 1954, 4 new regions were created in Russia, one of which was Lipetsk. So the city becomes a regional center. Lipetsk was actively developing, its population was growing. In 1965 the right bank and left bank districts were formed. In 1966, direct railway service to Moscow was opened, an airport was built. A little later appears streetcar and trolleybus service.
Nowadays in Lipetsk there are large steel and rolling mills "Svobodny Sokol" and Novolipetsk Metallurgical Plant, a plant for the production of household appliances Indesit, the production of mineral water brands "Saint Spring", "Rosinka", "Edelweiss", "Zhivaya Voda".
