The University of Hildesheim (Stiftung Universität Hildesheim) began its activity as a part of the Pedagogical Institute of Lower Saxony in 1946, in 1978 the educational institution was granted the autonomous status of a university. It is a humanitarian university, the main direction is social and information sciences. Independent of the state, it relies on the financial support of private partners.
