The Golden Bridge in Vladivostok is one of the five largest cable-stayed bridges in the world, and is a Guinness Book of Records record holder for the length of the main span. When designing the bridge, all the relief and climatic features of the region were taken into account. The Golden Bridge is located in the area of the funicular and connects the city center with the outlying areas and the federal highway.
The first designs for the bridge over the Golden Horn Bay were developed in the late nineteenth century, but World War I prevented them from being realized. Then there was a revolution and civil war. In peacetime, the question of the need to build the bridge became relevant again. New projects were ready in the mid thirties of the twentieth century, but the Second World War thwarted all plans. And only the decision to hold the APEC summit on the Russian island in 2012 led to the real work on the construction of the Vladivostok cable-stayed bridge.
The length of the Golden Bridge in Vladivostok is almost 1,400 meters and width is almost 30 meters. The overall structure extends for more than two kilometers: it takes about half an hour to walk on the bridge. The height of the structure above the water level is 65 meters. The height of the pylons - 230 meters. Golden Bridge can withstand wind speeds of up to 47 meters per second and an earthquake of 8 points.
For vehicular traffic six lanes of traffic plus a pedestrian zone are provided. The bridge was first opened for pedestrians in a test mode - it was supposed to show how comfortable walking on the bridge is for the residents of the city. Today, pedestrians move freely on the bridge, the travel time is about twenty minutes. Also on the bridge launched the movement of public transport. Buses go to Russky Island and to Katernaya street.
The main feature of the Golden Bridge is the unusual shape of its pylons. The pylons of the bridge, not having an upper diaphragm - two inclined divergent struts. Earlier pylons of such design had not been erected anywhere else. Due to its technical characteristics and original architecture, the Golden Bridge was included in the top ten largest bridges in the world.
