Mira is a municipality in the central Portuguese district of Coimbra. A coastal municipality known for its beaches, forests and agriculture, with a population of 12,465 people in an area of about 124.03 square kilometers.
In 1442, Regent Peter, Duke of Coimbra, granted administrative autonomy to the city of Mira.
The transfer of ownership of the region occurred almost a century later, during the reign of King Manuel I. At that time, on August 28, 1514, the king granted Gonzalo Tavares, the first liege lord of Mira, the privilege of developing the region.
Mira was annexed to the bishopric and comarca of Coimbra in 1758.
