On the coast of the Bosna River stretches the town of Zenica. From the name of the local river came the name of the region of Bosnia. The altitude of the area, where the city is located, is 316 meters above sea level. Between Zenica and Sarajevo, the capital, one can travel 70 kilometers. There are forests in the vicinity of the city. Most of the citizens are Bosnians. Zenica is also home to small Serbian and Croatian communities.
The town is connected with other settlements of the country by road and railroad, which also connects it to the remote town of Ploce. The transport network is laid out along the valley of the Bosna River. The nearest airport with international status is located in the capital city of Sarajevo.
The main enterprise is the ironworks, the largest iron and steel works in Central Europe. It was opened in 1892 on the basis of a small plant. In 1945 the production was reconstructed, and then expanded and renovated with the installation of new equipment. In 1968 it was reunited with two more similar plants, mines and several metal processing plants. An important role in the modernization of the plant was played by the Soviet Union, which supplied to Zenica the latest equipment and technical documentation at that time. Its products are coke, rolled steel and steel.
Old Zenica has preserved numerous historical and architectural buildings of the past centuries. Among them there is a synagogue building from 1906. Nowadays there is city museum with rare exhibits and art gallery, where works of famous painters of the federation are exposed.
