Stara Zagora is a city of poets, artists, straight streets and linden trees. The city is nestled in the south-central part of Bulgaria and today is one of the largest and most modern cities in Bulgaria. Its favorable geographical position makes the town an important economic and social center in the course of time.
Stara Zagora is one of the oldest towns in Europe. The history of the town goes back to the 6th-5th millennium B.C.
Many prehistoric settlements were found in the region but 3 of them are situated in the limits of today Stara Zagora: the Bereket Mound, the Azmashka Mound and the Mound of the district hospital of the town. For many years the territory of today Stara Zagora was conquered by the Greeks, the Romans and the Byzantines. The town first became a part of the Bulgarian state in 717g. during the reign of Khan Tervel.
Nowadays Stara Zagora is a dynamically developing town which influences the development of the whole south central region of Bulgaria. The town has 152 718 inhabitants and in terms of population Stara Zagora ranks sixth among the Bulgarian towns. The town is situated at an altitude of 197 m above the sea level. The town consists of separate districts, which are located around the central part.
