The South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) is a National optical astronomy organization located in Sutherland and Cape Town in South Africa. It operates under the auspices of the Research Development Foundation. The UAAO was formed in 1972 from the merger of the old Royal Observatory in Cape Town and the Republic Observatory in Johannesburg. Some of their telescopes were moved to Sutherland, and in 1974 a 1.9-meter telescope purchased from the Radcliffe Observatory (Pretoria) was placed there. A few small instruments remain in Cape Town, where the observatory administration is located.
