Varazze, with its beaches and beautiful promenade, is the main seaside resort of the eastern part of the Riviera di Ponente (Italy).
The city got its name during the days of ancient Rome from the Roman word Varagine, which means trees. A little later, the Romans began to call this place Ad Navalia or "city in the shipyards".
These names are quite appropriate for the city, because during its ancient and medieval history, there were shipyards here because of the large number of woods.
