Abakan is a city in southern Siberia, a city district, the capital of the subject of the Russian Federation Republic of Khakassia, with a population of 171.2 thousand people. It is located in the center of the southern part of the Minusinsk depression at the confluence of the Abakan and Yenisei rivers. The average height of Abakan above sea level is 250 meters, the time zone deviation from Moscow is + 4 hours.

The climate is sharply continental. Summers are mostly warm with rare periods of heat. Winter is long, moderately severe. Spring begins in mid-April, but cold weather may return until June. Autumn is climatically the last decade of October.

The year of the foundation of Abakan is considered 1931, when the city plan, the city limits and the name of the city were approved. Prior to that it was called: from 1925 to 1931 - Khakassk (settlement), from the end of the 18th century - Ust-Abakansk (village), formed on the site of Abakan stockaded town, known since 1675, and settlement in the mouth of Abakan were located since the Bronze Age. During archaeological excavations in and around the town found the remains of buildings dating back to the 5th century, some historians, therefore, offer to determine the age of the city more than 1500 years.

The city was named after the name of the nearby river Abakan, at the mouth of which it historically originated. The origin of the toponym Abakan itself is not reliably known.

The first written mention of Abakan dates back to the middle of the 18th century.
