Ballina is a city in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, Australia. The urban population of Ballina as of June 2018 was 26,381. The town is located on the Richmond River and serves as the gateway to Byron Bay.
Ballina was founded in the 1840s on the north bank of the Richmond River, 20 km south of Cape Byron, Australia's easternmost point. The Richmond River Lighthouse was first built in Ballina in 1866, which served as an important port in the region.
The temporary lighthouse was replaced by the present one, designed by James Barnett in 1879 and first lit in 1880. It is still in operation today. A rail line connected Ballina with the Mervillumbach Railroad branch line of the Buoyong Railroad. The line was opened on August 24, 1930 and closed on January 12, 1949.
