Apatity is a town in the Murmansk region of Russia. The center of the urban district of Apatity with subordinate territory, which in addition to it includes the village of Tik-Guba and Khibiny station.
Located on the Kola Peninsula, between the Imandra Lake and the Khibiny Mountains, on the left bank of the Belaya River.
Railway station (Apatity-1) on the Murmansk - Belomorsk line (Octyabrskaya railroad). Population 49 647 (2021). The fifth largest city in the world beyond the Arctic Circle.
The laying of the city The foundation of the city began in 1951, a plan of the first eleven buildings was outlined. In 1954 the construction of the Akademgorodok began. Stalin's death suspended the work on the city's construction. Everything froze until 1956. Only when the construction of Kirovskaya GRES began, as well as the design of ANOF-2, the construction work resumed. In 1956, the first house was commissioned. The flat terrain allowed to build wide, smooth and long streets.
The construction trust "Apatitstroy" was founded and the construction not only of dwelling houses but also schools, cultural institutions and kindergartens was started. In 1961 Kola branch of Soviet Academy of Sciences was relocated to Apatity.
It was transformed into a town on July 7, 1966.
