The city of Ulyanovsk is the administrative center of the Ulyanovsk region, which is located in the southeastern region of European Russia. It lies on both banks of the majestic Volga River, stretching across the broad Volga uplands, next to the Kuybyshev Reservoir. Also, the river called the Sviyaga flows through the city, converging with the riverbed of the Volga. This city of regional importance has become the center of the municipality. It is 890 km away from the capital of Russia, and its area is 622.5 km². In terms of population, the city ranks 22nd in the ranking of Russian cities and the number of inhabitants of Ulyanovsk is 626 540 people according to data from 2018.
Previously, Ulyanovsk had a completely different name - Simbirsk (an even earlier version - Sinbirsk). The city was founded in the 17th century, becoming a fortification of the Russian borders near the banks of the Volga. The history of the city has many glorious moments and important events. It is home to cultural figures and politicians, such as Lenin, Kerensky and Goncharov. Modern Ulyanovsk is a harmonious combination of historical sites, ancient architecture and beautiful nature, typical for the Volga region. There are also modern monuments and monuments, such as a funny and unusual monument to the letter Yo or a sculpture in the form of Oblomov's couch.
The city received its modern name in honor of the legendary leader of the proletariat V. Lenin (by his real surname Ulyanov).
The city of Simbirsk appeared on maps in 1648, when the czar Alexei Mikhailovich signed a decree to build a fortress on the banks of the Volga. The fortress was to protect the country from Tatar raids, and it was headed by a boyar and voivode named Bogdan Khitrovo. He is also considered the founder of Simbirsk.
