Dunedin has close historical links with the Scottish city of Edinburgh. Dunedin is the old Gaelic name for Edinburgh, and many of the streets of this New Zealand city bear Scottish names. Some Scottish traditions have also been preserved here since the first Presbyterian settlers arrived in the country in 1848. The center of the city is an octagonal square-Octagon, around which several blocks are occupied by administrative buildings – the best examples of Victorian and Edwardian style in the country. The center of Dunedin is very compact, and you can easily get around it in an hour and a half of free time.
