The main town (with a population of about 3,000) is located in the northwest, above the only harbor (and only accessible to small ships). It also has fortifications, including one formerly used as a prison.
There are ferries and JVCs from Trapani to the island and it is also close to the main sea routes from the Eastern Mediterranean to the Western Mediterranean Sea. The island has Margana airport (formerly a military airfield).
Archaeological excavations have shown traces of human habitation, including dwellings, in layers 35 thousand years old.
