Webcam Chantry Island. Southampton Range Lighthouse
Chantry Island is a small island on Lake Guron, south of the mouth of the Sugin River and about one kilometer from the shores of Southampton, Ontario, and south of the mouth of the Sugin River on Lake Guron. It is about 19 hectares and is a migratory bird sanctuary. Because the reserve extends 183 feet into the water surrounding the island, the total official area is 63 hectares.
British naval officer and surveyor Henry Walsey Bayfield named the island in 1822 after the British sculptor Francis Leggatt Chantry. In 1957, the island was recognized as one of the migratory bird sanctuaries of the Canadian Wildlife Service because it is an important stopover for migratory birds on their way to northern nesting grounds.
At certain times of the year, it is home to many mating birds, including two-tailed cormorants, gulls, herring gulls, ringed gulls, black-crowned night herons, great blue herons and great white herons.
