Slantsy was founded in connection with the development of the Gdovsky oil shale deposit, discovered in 1926. Slantsy residents consider S. M. Kirov, the former first secretary of the Leningrad Regional Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, to be the founder of the town. On his initiative on April 9, 1930 began the construction of an experimental exploitation mine.
In Slantsy the work on the improvement of the public territory in front of 25 buildings 4,6,8 of Lenin St. "Apple-tree Garden" was started and is actively carried out. This area won the online voting of residents who chose their favorite landscaping design on a unified federal platform. A total of 4174 people took part in the voting, and more than 3,300 votes were cast for the winning project.
Proceeding from the wishes of the inhabitants, the design project takes into account the presence of footpaths, recreation areas, lighting, installation of benches and urns, arrangement of a playground.
It is worth noting that this area has its own characteristics, and the project had to deal with different situations. Probably the main feature comes from the name - the territory is very green and planted with apple trees. Unfortunately, all of them are already in a state of disrepair. So in preparing the area and landscaping, the contractor had to remove these old and shrivelled trees.
The project called for preserving the individual character of the Apple Tree Orchard area. After the work is completed, 25 apple tree seedlings will be planted to replace the 20 downed old trees. Residents can be directly involved not only in the planning of the planting sites, but also in the planting process itself. Involving citizens in city improvement activities, including labor participation, is one of the main goals of the "Forming a Comfortable Urban Environment" program.
Landscaping is an important stage in the implementation of many improvement projects. For example, in the neighborhood of "Apple Garden" there is a wonderful territory, landscaped last year under the program "Formation of comfortable city environment". Here were planted 30 saplings of maples and 21 thuja trees. In addition, during the last year 50 spherical willows, 50 hawthorn bushes, 20 lindens, 50 rose hips were planted in the territory of Slantsy urban settlement.
