Segezha is a city in Karelia, located in its central part, on the shore of Lake Vygozero, in the place where the river Segezha flows into it. In fact, because of its location at the mouth of the river the town got its name.
Initially this area was inhabited by the Sami - a small Finno-Ugric people, and from the XII century there were Karelians and Russians.
The area of territory of Segezha district is 10.7 thousand square kilometers.
The status of the city of Segezha was given in 1943.
