Webcam Urumqi. Shqiao Bridge
Urumqi is a city in China, which is the most distant from the sea megalopolis in the world. It is located on the slopes of the mountains and has a developed industry. Tourists will be interested to see the sights, the main of which are the Hunshan Mountain and natural hot springs.
In ancient times the Xinjiang Uygur region of China, where the city is located, was divided into several isolated principalities. The Great Silk Road ran through the area, so many tribes tried to capture the strategic point.
This continued until the 10th and 11th century, when Islamic religious teachings began to gain ground in the region. The Chinese influence weakened considerably and reappeared only in the 18th century.
Urumqi didn't get its name until the middle of the 19th century. It is translated from the ancient Mongolian as "beautiful pasture". Since 1884, the settlement was given the status of the capital of the region.
According to the 2010 census, more than 3.11 million people were registered in the city district. Specialists note a record level of growth, since 10 years before that there were just over 2 million people living here. Already in 2013, new calculations showed that the settlement was home to 3.5 million residents.
Population growth began to accelerate in the 1960s and 1970s. Chinese began to be resettled from the eastern parts of the country to equalize them with the Uighur peoples who traditionally inhabited the region. As a result, Urumqi grew from a small village into a modern metropolis.
The Xixiao Bridge, one of the "Ten Views" of Urumqi, is an important transportation hub that has almost three hundred years of history. In 1763, the Qing government built the first bridge over the Urumqi River, the "Hongqiao Bridge," which was renamed the "Gongning Bridge" in 1906. It was called the "West Bridge" because it was located on the west side of the city. It was rebuilt in 1918 and destroyed again in 1940. In 1959, the People's Government built a reinforced concrete bridge, which was rebuilt in 1996 and is still in use today. The Xixiao Bridge is a witness to time and the memory of generations.
