Sapporo is the largest settlement in northern Japan. It is the administrative center of Hokkaido and is home to the prefectural government. Sapporo is one of the few Japanese cities that is built according to a clear architectural plan. The main boulevard of Odori, 100 m wide and 1.6 km long, runs through the entire city center, dividing it into northern and southern parts. Streets and avenues intersect at right angles, like on a chessboard.
