The Market Square (Marktplatz) is Dusseldorf's main square on the banks of the Rhine River and is the center of the Altstadt (Old Town, or Historic Center) district of Dusseldorf.
The area has a trapezoid shape measuring 52-58 m from north to south and 55 m from west to east. There are such historic buildings as the City Hall, the Baroque apartment building, the Administration building, and in the center of the square there is a monument to Johann-Wilhelm.
Marktplatz hosts festivals, Christmas markets, and on "Pink Monday" the annual carnival procession takes place on Market Square. The main Christmas tree of North Rhine-Westphalia is put up and the new year is celebrated here.
