Webcam San Juan. La Ocho Beach
San Juan is the capital and largest city of Puerto Rico. Old San Juan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is located on an island connected to the mainland by walkways and bridges. More than 400 Spanish colonial buildings along narrow cobblestone streets remain in this historic district.
It is believed to have been visited by Christopher Columbus in 1493 and San Juan was founded by Spanish colonists in the early 16th century. Among the main attractions are the forts of San Felipe del Morro in the 16th century and San Cristobal in the 17th century.
The construction of the fortifications was justified by the fact that San Juan was a major port of entry for Spanish merchant and military vessels, and at that time there were frequent attacks by the English (three times), Dutch and Americans. San Juan was occupied only at the end of the Spanish-American War, and Spain ceded the island to America.
