Braunschweig — a large city in Northern Germany in the south-east of the federal state of Lower Saxony, is the second largest city in Lower Saxony. The city is located in the northern part of Germany, between the northern border of the Harz mountain range and the transition to the North German Lowland. The Oker River flows through the town. In the south, a dam is installed, so the Oker surrounds the city center on the west and east sides (this was done in the Middle Ages to better protect the city) and then merges into one stream in the southwestern part of the city.
