Sudak is a small resort town on the southern coast of Crimea. It is known for its well-preserved monument of medieval fortification - the Genoese fortress, the annual festival "Genoese Slam" and excellent beaches. Located in the valley of the river Sudak urban area is populated by 16.5 thousand people.

From the west, the city is limited by the Krepostnaya mountain, on top of which stands a famous fortress. The towers and walls of the ancient fort are some of the oldest buildings that have survived in Sudak. The city is surrounded from the North by the Taraktash Mountain, or "Rocky Ridge," and its Eastern part rests on the protected Alchak Cape. Many people come to the cape for its marvelous seaside landscapes and the interesting natural monument - the through grotto of Aeolian Harp.

The coastal settlement near the river that flows into the sea was founded in 212 by the Sugds. This name was given to one of the Adyg tribes. In the Middle Ages there were different names for the Crimean city: the Italians named it "Soldaya", and the Greeks named it "Sugdaia". The city expanded and grew due to traders from Italy and Greece arriving here, as well as artisans who came to earn money.

In the VI century the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I the Great decided to build fortifications on the Crimean coast. The city reached its greatest prosperity in the XII-XIII centuries, when the routes of the Great Silk Road were laid past it. In the middle of XIV century Soldaya was conquered by the Genoese, and in 1475 the army of the Ottoman Empire. The period of Turkish rule had an adverse effect on the city.

He fell into decline, and the number of people who lived here year by year was becoming smaller.
In 1783, Sudak, like other Crimean cities, became part of the Russian Empire. During the Great Patriotic War, this part of Crimea was occupied by German-Romanian occupation, and when peace came, Sudak began to develop as a health resort and center of winemaking.
