Camera Online Lake Menteith

Lake Of Menteith, also known as Loch Inchmahome, is a body of water in Scotland, located on the Carse of Stirling, the floodplain of the headwaters of the Forth and Tate rivers, upstream from Stirling.

Until the early 19th century, the more common Scottish name for Lake Menteith was used, and the 1654 Atlas of Scotland Blough names it Loch Ince Mahumo. The only settlement on Lake Menteith is the port of Menteith.

There are several small islands in the lake. On the largest, Inchmahome, is an ancient monastery that served as a refuge for Mary, Queen of Scots. In 1547 she was four years old, and at that time she remained for three weeks on the island, after the disastrous battle of the Pinks in September of that year.

The lake is not very deep and freezes completely in exceptionally cold winters. If the ice gets thick enough (at least 18 cm), it hosts an outdoor curling tournament called the Bonspiel or Grand Match. The event, despite its rarity, can attract thousands of spectators. The last Grand Match was held in 1979.
