Macau is a special administrative region of the People's Republic of China that was once a Portuguese colony. It is located in the south of the country, on the coast of the South China Sea, and occupies a small peninsula (Macau) and two islands nearby (Coloan and Taipa).
They are connected by bridges. Nearby, to the east, is Hong Kong, which can also be reached by bridge across the sea, as well as by sea transport.
Macau is very small. Its area is only 30 square kilometers. To give you an idea of its scale, here is some information for comparison. Moscow covers 2,500 square kilometers, and Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, is 368 square kilometers. A small Russian town (not a regional center) is 50-70 square kilometers.
It is often said that Macau is a separate country, but it is not. In fact, Macau is China, although it is a special territory. But many people call it a country out of habit, because it has its own government and even currency.
Macau is the world capital of gambling. Macau, not Las Vegas is the leader in the number of casinos and gambling revenues.
