Market Square in Vyborg is located in the historic center of the city. It is bounded by Progonnaya, Krasnoarmeiskaya, Pionerskaya streets and the embankment of the 30th Guards Corps.
The market square was territorially formed at the end of the 19th century. About the fact that there used to be buildings here, reminds a squat Round Tower, which was part of the defense system of the Horned Fortress. In the western part of the square with red granite paving stones we can see the location of one of the fortress walls. Facing the square are the facades of the Market Hall, the former Bank of Finland, and the former United Bank. They were built in the first years of the 20th century, and although different architects created them, together they form a beautiful urban ensemble.
The market square has always had a commercial function. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries farmers brought here their simple products. Until now, an attentive tourist will see numbers embossed on some cobblestones of the sidewalk - a marking of "parking spaces" for carts. Today, the square is mostly used for souvenir goods.
