Webcam Lake Yukumben
Lake Eucumbene is an artificial lake in Australia on the Eucumbene River, on the eastern slopes of the Snowy Mountains in New South Wales. The lake is the result of a dam built on its bed between 1956 and 1958 for the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme.
The dam is an earthen berm 116 meters high and 686 meters thick at the base. With 4.3 billion cubic meters of water storage (nine times the water volume of Sydney Bay), the dam is the largest in the region.
The village of Adaminabi was relocated in 1957 when the Snowy Mountains hydroelectric plants were built. The original area was flooded by Lake Yucumben.
The Snowy Mountains region, the highest on the Australian continent, was the Snowy Mountains scheme from 1949 to 1974. It included the diversion of waterways to generate power for cities in the southeast and to irrigate the arid interior of the country. Sixteen large dams, seven large power plants (two below), a pumping station, 145 km of mountain tunnels and 80 km of aqueducts were built. The development is managed and supported by Snowy Hydro Limited.
