Cologne Cathedral (Kolner Dom) is a Roman Catholic Gothic cathedral in Cologne (Germany), which ranks third in the list of the tallest churches in the world and is one of the World Cultural Heritage monuments. The construction of the main church of the Archdiocese of Cologne was carried out in two stages — in 1248-1437 and in 1842-1880. Upon completion, the 157-meter cathedral became the tallest building in the world for 4 years. The place where the cathedral is located today was, apparently, in the Roman period of the history of Cologne, the religious center of the Christians who lived here. Here, in the northern part of the city, several generations of churches were built over the centuries, each of which was larger than all the previous ones. These churches were located within the ring of monasteries and monastic churches of "holy Cologne".
