Lajes do Pico (Lajes do Pico) is a town and municipality in Portugal, part of the Azores district and located on the island of Pico.
The island of Pico is located in the central part of the Azores archipelago and has a population of about 14,200. The island is sparsely populated due to volcanic activity. Climatically, the archipelago has a favorable location.
З Temperatures rarely fall below +18 ºC in the winter and reach a maximum of +26 ºC in the summer. The water in the coastal area in summer has a temperature of about +23 ºC, on the islands in bad weather there are strong winds.
Historically, whaling was practiced on Piku Island. Today, it is carefully regulated by the government and conservation organizations. Pico is also popular amongst the Portuguese people for its wine growing tradition which dates back to the 15th century. Portuguese wines are some of the most popular in the world. The area of vineyards at Pico is about 990 hectares. Winemaking and tourism are the main earnings of the locals.
