Vologda is a city in Russia, the administrative, cultural, transport and scientific center of the Vologda region, the center of the Vologda district, which is not included, having the status of a city of regional significance and forming the urban district of the city of Vologda. Vologda is located 450 kilometers from Moscow and 650 kilometers from St. Petersburg. The population of the city is 306,593 people (2022).

Monument to the IL-28 was established in 1984 and is dedicated to its creator - the talented aircraft designer of the USSR Sergey Vladimirovich Ilyushin. The plane flew to Vologda independently to Fedotovo airfield and at night it was transported by highway to the regional capital.

The IL-28 was the first tactical jet bomber in the USSR. At first it worked with the British engine "Nin" company "Rolls-Royce". In mass production in 1949 came with the domestic VK-1. It was made about 6000 aircraft of various modifications: reconnaissance, attack, torpedo, training and anti-submarine machines. But by the end of 50-ies it began to be replaced by the Yak-28. Some IL-28 were converted to towing targets or used for training purposes, but the bulk of the mass was simply destroyed. The aircraft, standing in Vologda, refers to the training.

For the creation of the IL-28 Sergei Vladimirovich Ilyushin was awarded the Stalin Prize. In total for his inventions the designer received seven Stalin prizes, which is a record number for this award, given in one hand. Sergey Vladimirovich Ilyushin was born in the village of Dilyalyovo, Vologda province in 1894. He gave birth to many models of aircraft, which were in service not only in the USSR, but also in China, the CIS countries, the Baltics and even Indonesia and Egypt.
