The American University of Beirut is a secular, private, independent university in the Lebanese capital of Beirut. It was founded by American missionary Daniel Bliss in 1866 as the "Syriac Protestant College". On November 18, 1920, the name was changed to the current one. For 100 years, the university operated an astronomical observatory-the Lii Observatory.
