Severodvinsk is a small city with almost 70 years of history. It acquired its modern name only in 1957. Territorially it is located in the Arkhangelsk region, 35 km from the regional center, and is a municipality. Geographically Severodvinsk is located at the confluence of the Northern Dvina River into the White Sea. This place is called Nikolskoe estuary.
Climatically Severodvinsk is equated to the Far North. Summer is very short, with no more than 2-3 warm weeks, and the winter is long and cold. Affects the proximity of the sea, so a lot of precipitation and high humidity. It has very few sunny days, which leads to depressions and diseases.
The area of the city is just under 120 square kilometers, which exceeds the size of Moscow within the Moscow Ring Road. This is due to the fact that the city's territory includes large forested areas. The population, according to the latest census, is only 188.5 thousand people. More than half are able-bodied residents of the city, the rest are schoolchildren, students and pensioners. There is a tendency of gradual aging of the population. Territorially, the city is divided into two parts: old and new.
However, residents traditionally divide it into 3 components: the so-called "town", "neighborhoods" and "yagry":
- "city" is the central part of Severodvinsk, where the municipal government, official institutions, offices, banks, shopping centers, cultural institutions, etc. are located. It ends at the southern coast of the White Sea;
- "quarters" is a new development, a bedroom community;
- "yagry" is the most distant "village" district of the city, located behind the industrial
he industrial area, with a pine forest and a beach.
Despite its more than modest parameters, Severodvinsk is the most important military and economic center of Russia. It is the main base of the Russian nuclear shipbuilding industry. Enterprises of this industry employ over half of the total working population of the city. In fact, Severodvinsk is a satellite city of two enterprises:
- The Northern Machine Building Plant, which specializes in the construction and repair of submarines, including nuclear submarines, surface ships both military and civilian purposes, equipment for the development of offshore fields;
- Zvezdochka Ship Repair Center, which has a similar purpose and additionally builds drilling rigs.
In Severodvinsk there is the White Sea base of the Russian Navy, which is part of the Northern Fleet.
The presence of such serious enterprises causes a complicated environmental situation in Severodvinsk. This is due to the fact that nuclear submarines are being built here and there is a potential danger of radioactive contamination. The nuclear waste dump located near the city does not help to improve the situation.
In addition to military enterprises, the city has energy and food industries serving both machine-building plants and the population.
