The town of Sredets is located in Southeastern Bulgaria, in the Burgas region, and is the administrative center of the municipality of Sredets.
The town is located 30 km southeast of Burgas on the right bank of the Sredets River, near the Mandra Lake. The territory of the municipality stretches along a vast plain surrounded by northwestern slopes of Strandzha Mountain. The town has a population of about 9,000.
The settlement was first mentioned in 1595 under the name Kara Bunar, which means "black well" in Turkish.
At the end of V early VI century near the modern city was built fortress Potamukastel.
During Ottoman rule, the local population left the fortress and settled to the east of it, where they founded the village of Kara Bunar. In 1934, the village was renamed to Sredets, and in 1960 it was given the status of town. From 1950 to 1993 the town was called Grudovo after Todor Grudov, a communist activist and former mayor of the village.
Today the town's economy is represented by such industries as metallurgy, chemical industry, mechanical engineering, agriculture and forestry, trade and services.
