Krakow webcam. Nowa Huta district, Central Square

Krakow has long been considered the cultural capital of Poland. Even when the city was part of the Austrian Empire (after another partition of Poland), it enjoyed considerable rights and freedoms. Well, in the 20th century, after Poland gained its independence, the city fully justified the title of the cultural capital. It is no coincidence that in 1939, when the Nazis occupied the city, they hurried to gather all the intellectual elite and take them to the concentration camps.

Not surprisingly, after the end of World War II, when the question arose as to what order the new government would create, the intellectuals of Krakow began to openly express their dissatisfaction with the new order. Therefore, the political leadership of the country decided to dilute the city's intelligentsia with the working class.

This is how the decision arose to build a new proletarian city near Krakow called Nowa Huta, which translates as New Metallurgical Works.
On June 30, 1949, a Youth Brigade of the Polish Service arrived near the village of Mogila, and construction began on the first postwar city and the largest ironworks in the country - Nowa Huta. Soon there appeared the first residential areas, which were settled by people from all over Poland. The new city promised new jobs and a new life.

Workers from all over the country - from villages and small towns, i.e., the very proletariat, who, as the classics say, had nothing to lose but their chains. I do not want to defame the builders of the combine, but that was the idea of the political leadership.

If in 1951 the city's population was 15 thousand people, it increased to 120 thousand people in 12 years. Today there are about 200 thousand people living there.

Today, the metallurgical plant has been renamed. Now it is not named after Lenin, but Tadeusz Sendzimir. He was a famous metallurgist who worked in Poland, Russia, and China. After World War II, he lived in the United States, achieved significant success in his professional activities, he also did a lot for the training of Polish metallurgists in America.
Now the mill is called Huta im.Tadeusza Sendzimira (HTS).
